The podcast is back just in time to send 2015 off in style! On this week’s show we sit down with Projection Designer Alex Koch. Alex tells us how he came to be part of a team of young designers all making their Broadway debut on ‘Irena’s Vow’ and what he knows now that he wished he knew then. He talks about the ongoing process of educating producers and directors about the world of projections, how he assembles a unique team for each project, and whether or not Projection Designers will become an endangered species as more Set Designers become comfortable creating their own content. Hear how the success of ‘Buyer and Cellar’ affected his career, and Cory makes him tell stories of being an Aquarium worker in Boston and which penguin was his favorite!
Alex Basco Koch designs projections for theater, live events and film. Notable designs include Irena’s Vow on Broadway at the Walter Kerr; Marley, a world-premiere musical about the Jamaican icon and legend directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah; Goodbar, a rock opera with feature-length film projections in the The Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival; and the world premiere stage adaptation of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man with openings at the Court Theatre in Chicago, the Studio Theatre in Washington DC, and the Huntington Theatre in Boston. Koch’s work as a film producer and editor have been seen at the Tribeca Film Festival among others.
In 2016 Alex’s projections can be seen in a feature documentary headlining the opening night of Sundance in Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You, directed by Heidi Ewing & Rachel Grady; also in Don Cheadle’s new film Miles Ahead (also the titles design and end title animations) opening across the country in April.
Alex has designed for many New York City theater companies and festivals including the Public’s Under the Radar Festival, Waterwell, the Woodshed Collective, the Director’s Company, Urban Stages, Repertorio Espanol, Little Opera Theater, Ensemble Studio Theatre, TerraNOVA, Theater Mitu, Ma-Yi, the Assembly, the Electric Pear, and SummerStage.
